Remember David Le Fleming from Magazine #002? Well he's painted some more bonnets...

"You are cordially invited to a group exhibition featuring the likes of Jonathan Darby, Replete, SPQR, Alke Schmidt and I,David Le Fleming. It's an interesting mix of contemporary political stuff and technique focused discourses. I've submitted 'Shuttle Cock Grand Prix' from the Morri's Gumpy series (see photo) which I've been re-working over the past few months as I wasn't completely happy with it. It takes on a different meaning within the context of this show but one which is fitting none the less."

Loose Lips Sink Ships

seashepherd_party.jpgLoose Lips Sink Ships is a event aimed to raise funds and awareness for Sea Shepherd's 2008/2009 campaign, whilst having a rip roaring good time. The evening promises to be an entertaining and enlightening experience. Beginning with a Sea Shepherd film screening followed by music from three talented local acts, Farmer Pimp, Homebrew and Hit Deluxe. Expect to hear everything from Dub to Jazz, Hip Hop to Trip Hop.

Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Sea Shepherds mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.

Every year Whales of all species, from across the globe, migrate south to feed in the waters around Antarctica. Japanese Whalers (under the guise of "Research") recklessly harpoon these gentle giants in the back. Then after a long painful death are eventually shipped back to Japan ending there lives to produce anything from hamburger patties to cat food. This November Sea Shepherd will commence 'Operation Musashi', their fifth annual Antarctic Whale defense campaign. Departing from Brisbane, Australia the Sea Shepherd Ship Steve Irwin will then stop in Dunedin to refuel before continuing to the oceans south of New Zealand where Japanese Whalers aim to illegally slaughter 1000 Whales. Sea Shepherd will be the only organization there to confront and stop them.

This is a party not to be missed by anyone who likes good soulful music and cares about the present and future state of our oceans, and its inhabitants.

Well sh!t we didn't expect it to go that well. Sideroom.com Garage Sale #002 was a HUGE success. At the start of the day the walls were covered top to bottom with about 300 fabulous art works from 15 or so artists. By the end of the day that number was reduced to around 100 works. We had a cue of excited buyers lining up with arms full of paintings, quickly ensuring that their favourite works weren't snapped up by some other lucky buyer.

Big thanks to everyone who came and purchaced art and to all the artists involved for clearing out your studios and making this the best art sale we have ever had.

If you didn't make it on saturday don't frett, there is still a fair few awesome pieces yet to walk out the door. So come by any time during the day over the next week or so and make sure you get you hands on some of this quality discounted artwork.

A couple of weeks ago we were invited to paint in New Zealand's famous Mural Town Katikati as part of the Open Air Arts Festival.

Sideroom came to the party and created a modern take on the classic Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault as part of the "Journies" theme.

Thanks to everyone in Katikati for coming and checking out the work and all the positive feed back. Speical thanks to Jane Burke for organising it all, RPG for putting us up, Renee for entertaining the following night and Qwaffers Liquor Store for keeping our whistles wet. Congratulations too to Krystal on grabbing a Sideroom T for being the longest standing observer.

Keep an eye out on Trademe.co.nz for the mural going up for auction, proceeds going to the fine people of Katikati.

The Politics of Ignorance

I got a bit caught up on pootube this morning watching videos of outrageous McCain-Palin supporters. It is unbelievable how much hatred and anger can be sparked by different political views. Sure the camera men in these clips are a wee bit antagonising but god dam people are you serious? One guy is seen shouting "Commie Faggots" at Obama supporters. It is no wonder that Obama is seen as such a symbol of hope.
