Tiger Translate Beijing was Tiger China’s largest scale event. Curated around the theme ‘Metropolis’, the event saw six bands from across China compete for a residency contract in a club in Singapore. International street artists collaborated live on a series of sky-scraper tower blocks, using UV markers. At the same time, digital artists participated in ‘Double Vision’ – live drawing on photographs of Asian cities.

Graffiato is a unique and dynamic street art festival, providing artists with an abundance of blank walls and a weekend to create vibrant and colorful permanent artworks.

Curated by Cut Collective member, Ross Liew, Graffiato is a new festival delivered by Erupt Events, Taupō’s Arts Trust, who also deliver the nationally renowned biennial ‘Erupt Lake Taupō Festival’.

“Graffiato is going to permanently change the face of street art in New Zealand,” said Mr Liew. “For some time now, street art and graffiti has been gaining an ever-increasing profile across the world. While certain names have cut through and now register for many within middle New Zealand, our own country’s practitioners have often been left overlooked. Graffiato will change that.”

What: Graffiato

Where: Taupo

When: Labour weekend, 2011

Cut Collective’s fifth iteration of the Public Access exhibition marks a renewed focus on topical matters and a concentrated collaborative process.

Cut Collective’s fifth iteration of the Public Access exhibition marks a renewed focus on topical matters and a concentrated collaborative process.

Working around the central theme of “Picture Perfect in a World of Chaos”, this show deals with the representation of a world that is a palpable fantasy, and looks to explore the ridiculous nature of the variant realities we receive through multiple media channels. Something we here at CC have come to call “The Gap”.

When couched amongst the cataclysmic events that nature has brought to bear upon the world over the last few years, man made calamities such as the ongoing global financial crisis almost pale in comparison, almost. It could be said mother nature has provided the perfect scenario in which to obscure the devastation we inflicted upon ourselves. Or more accurately, the harm that few have inflicted upon many.

Through chaos we can achieve control, in the vacuum of order we can implement change. With the dissolution of community we champion the individual, it’s isolation through adversity and who wins when the village falls apart?

Joining the core cast of Cut Collective for the show is Hone Stjohn, a photographer and filmmaker with a focus on documenting street life and music related activity. Having worked with Homebrew, Scratch22 and most recently the @peace project on a variety of music videos, he’s now collaborating with Cut Collective to produce a moving image piece for Public Access 5.

Public Access 5 is one of three components hosted within Oi You!, a major street art event taking place under one roof at Founders Heritage Park, Nelson. The other parts are an exhibition of works from Banksy, Faile, Micallef, Os Gemeos, Swoon and others. And the Oi You! competition exhibition featuring the work of the competition finalists.

What: Public Access 5 – Picture perfect in a world of chaos.

Where: Founders Heritage Park, Nelson.

When: September 23 – October 24.

1. To punish (a person) by covering with tar and feathers.

2. To criticize severely and devastatingly; excoriate.

To be tarred and feathered was an unofficially sanctioned form of public display. It was designed as a punishment and to force the subject to change their ways or run them out of town.

Karley Feaver works across a range of disciplines including painting, sculpture and taxidermy. Her works offer a vision of a world where fantasy and reality merge into infinite possibilities, uncertainty, and wonder.

Chris Dennis’ paintings are perhaps best described as ‘Narrative expressionism’ or ‘internalized portraiture’. The stories behind these ‘Therianthropic’ pieces have been carefully obfuscated and invite the viewer to create their own narrative, bringing to mind facets or emotions that maybe more difficult to confront if not disguised behind a mask.

Taking Space will include new sculpture by contemporary NZ artists Scott Eady, Andrea du Chatenier, Aaron McConchie and Ryuzo Nishida.

In the creation of a sculpture, the sculptor takes matter and re-forms it, while the figurative painter creates the appearance of matter. While a sculpture affects the space around it, its effect can be complicated or contradicted by what we see nearby. It will change its appearance if we move relative to it, it will change with each context it is placed into; and so there is a continuing tension between a sculpture and the space it occupies.

Taking Space will include new sculpture by contemporary NZ artists Scott Eady, Andrea du Chatenier, Aaron McConchie and Ryuzo Nishida. Between them, this group of artists has worked with sculpture in the form of object, installation, assemblage and ready-made. All four artists interrogate the thorny territories of 21st century social order with innovation and experimental courage.

What: Taking Space; Scott Eady, Andrea du Chatenier, Aaron McConchie and Ryuzo Nishida
