Here is sneak peak at the latest Cut Collective Project.

Cut Collective and architectural graduate Jasper Middleton have combined forces to create a dramatic installation built and displayed for the Splore Festival at Tapapakanga Regional Park south of Auckland.

When Cut Collective artist Regan Vause (Peepshow) sought to push the envelope of stencil art application for the festival’s arts trail, he envisaged an installation of a suitable scale befitting the event and its stunning location.

“For Cut Collective, Splore is a perfect chance for us to push our own boundaries and take the opportunity to work with artists from different disciplines. In this case, working with Jasper, we are creating a painted architectural sculpture. This is something we have wanted to explore for a while now”

Jasper Middleton, a graduate architect working at award-winning practice Fearon Hay Architects, said the team wished to “create something that dually capitalised on the beautiful coastal setting of the festival location, as well as the fun, vibrant atmosphere on offer.

“We also wanted to provide something that took sculpture into the realm of the user, and provided a truly engaging experience that blurred the line between art and architecture.”

The resulting sculpture is a dramatic form that simultaneously functions as painting, sculpture, and building that will shelter its occupants and audience while creating a sense of intrigue for passers-by. “The geometry is deliberately difficult to comprehend from a distance, as the structure has varying degrees of visual permeability from each side it is viewed,” Middleton says.

The faceted, and interlocking surfaces of the pavilion create a sculpture that appears to be a site-specific work wedged into its environs. However, whilst complex in appearance, the structure has been deftly designed to fit together from a single component shape in order to minimise construction costs and ease the process of relocation.

Vause says “We have managed to produce an innovative work that can be packed down and shipped to a new site for further display, complete with a newly painted surface if need be. The flat panels present a canvas that can be approached however the occasion or site may require.”

This exciting blend of architectural design and art installation will be on display during the Splore outdoor music and art festival.

For the last 10 years, Dominick Martin has been writing liquid drum & bass as ‘Calibre.’ During that time he’s become one of the most prolific and respected producers in the scene, inspiring intense devotion with his distinctive soulful grooves. Shine A Light is his much anticipated downtempo album, and it’s bursting with loveliness.

Free from the drum structures of drum & bass, Martin integrates many of his signature elements into tracks that sound both familiar and refreshingly new: lush, cinematic strings, pianos, jazz drumming, and his own voice. For me the beauty of his work has always been its (apparent) simplicity: beautiful parts, astutely arranged, with minimal manipulation – creating textured music with deep emotional resonance (listen to ‘Last Kiss’ and you’ll feel what I mean).

For existing fans, this album is a necessity. For new listeners Shine A Light is a gorgeous collection of songs from an accomplished musician, in any genre.

The SIDEROOM.COM EXTRAVAGANZA 2009 will combine our proven recipe for banging parties with a cutting edge multimedia art exhibition, to produce a festival of pure creative extravagance that is going to be bigger and better than anything you’ve seen before.

December 19, 2009 will see Aucklands Bacco and Montecristo room nightclubs transform into a mini festival overflowing with sensory delights. Upstairs in the art zone an interactive wonderland of multimedia installations and performance art will provide space for the imagination, while downstairs in the grotto a line up of bands and DJs will fulfil even the most hedonistic urge to party in infamously raucous SIDEROOM.COM style.

Auckland art collective, the Cut Collective have teamed up with outdoor advertising company OGGI to collaborate on a series of artworks.

Artworks on Billboards that is.

OGGI has agreed to supply the Cut Collective with Billboard displays that are no longer required. Once cleaned up the Cut Collective donate their time and talent to creating magic on the unused side. Not only are they preventing another display ending up in the landfill, but OGGI at its expense, installs the new display onto an unbooked Billboard for everyone to enjoy.

To celebrate the first OGGI/Cut Collective collaboration they are auctioning the display off with the proceeds going to Kenzies Gift www.kenziesgift.com – a charity benefiting the legacy of a brave little girl and her family by providing much needed support to those who find themselves in similar circumstances.

You can view this Billboard skin up on OGGI’s Billboard – site A91 – North Western Motorway Pt Chevalier.
Keep your eyes open for more Billboard art from this collaboration, we don’t know where they might pop up next.

The auction for the 1st Billboard in this series of collaborations can be found here -
In the interests of simplifying the gargantuan 100 film plus programme, flicks.co.nz writer Andreas Heinemann will be checking out all the more obscure stuff, unearthing hidden gems so that you don’t miss any hard to see classics.

Wake in Fright

1971
Directed by Ted Kotcheff

For years this movie was unattainable and thought to be lost. After a worldwide search the negative was eventually tracked down in a Philadelphia warehouse where it was being stored in a container labelled ‘For Destruction.’ A week later and Wake in Fright would’ve been lost forever. Following a painstaking digital restoration, you now have the revival of one hell of a movie.

Its story is deceptively simple. A slick, urbane resident teacher in a tiny outback community tries to head back to Sydney for the Christmas holidays, only to be thwarted by the aggressive hospitality of the hard drinking locals. Wearing its exploitation credentials on its sleeve, the running time is crammed full of brutal violence, carnal lust and probably more booze consumption than any other film in the history of celluloid. Freaky montages and trippy lens flares abound while a soundtrack of drunken sing a long choruses and an aboriginal inspired psychedelic soundtrack bubbles away underneath. There is far more going on than just this wildly entertaining surface though.

The twisted laughs and jaw dropping shocks are played as more than cheap thrills; it’s also a scathing attack on Australian society and its values. If you want to get really deep and meaningful, it’s a study of social entrapment and a comment on the inherent savagery of mankind, who in the end are just civilised animals. Both the refined and the uncouth are effectively dragged back into the primordial ooze from where they came, without the film ever having to revert to moralising or a solemn tone. Wake in Fright achieves this by wrapping a deadpan socio-realist horror around one man’s descent into madness. See it at the festival while you can. This may be the only chance you ever get.
