Manky Chops Gallery are proud to present “SUPERTOY”. This exhibition features drawings, paintings, found objects and collaborative negotiations between Drypnz and PNTR. Both Wellington based visual artists who have been working unanimously in the same studio, as well as large-scale street works over the past years. Combining some powerful creative forces to bring you an exciting new body of work.

This exhibition will be exploring graffiti mentality, with several hidden elements of mockery and humor. Throughout the gallery there will be several different installation pieces; a series of painted found objects will occupy one wall, where the artists are interested in the dirt that accrues beneath the laminate surface of shiny objects. Within this exhibition the artists are constantly drawn to abject the degraded materials, by continuously isolating found objects from their natural environments, finding beauty and curiosity in the often overlooked. The drawings examine pun and metaphor within the humor of graffiti mentality, each of the artists individual styles are showcased in these works and allow for personal expression of this topic. Through out this process the artists are giving the audience time and a stage to contemplate an object, where connotations of mystery evolve as the pervious life of an object is questioned.

You can find out more about each artist at their websites, which list background information such as qualifications, previous shows, clients and antics.

‘Art in the Dark’ is an interactive community event that will be held in the dark in Ponsonby’s Western Park in October 2010.

The event is a collaboration between artists, businesses and community initiatives in the Grey Lynn and Ponsonby area to celebrate and foster community.

A nighttime event in Ponsonby’s Western Park, Art in the Dark will be environmentally friendly and interactive. Illuminated by installations, projected short films, and performances around a purpose-built pavilion, the park will transform into a temporary community hub.

One of our biggest tasks will be to use clean energy for lighting and sound. We are doing this by using a combination of biodiesel run generators, solar power and pedal-power.

We are hosting a pre-launch and artist registration on Thursday 17th of June to introduce the event to the local community and invite people to get involved.

Please see the invitation below for details.

Art in the Dark would be grateful if you could pass the invitation on to any artists, businesses or community members who you think may like to participate in the event. The core goal of the event is for artists, businesses and community members to work together and develop new forms of social interaction and sustainable practices within the community.

Please see our website for any further information: www.artinthedark.co.nz

Hope to see you there.

The nationwide search is on for artists to unleash their creativity on a truly epic scale by submitting a design that incorporates Red Bull in the most creative way imaginable for an iconic installation of light, sound and time.

Brief

Imagine having the freedom to transform an entire building with your art. Now is your chance to literally turn the city into your canvas.

Red Bull Stereopticon is about to project live painting to monumental new levels. The nationwide search is on for artists to unleash their creativity on a truly epic scale by submitting a design that incorporates Red Bull in the most creative way imaginable for an iconic installation of light, sound and time.

How it works

The winning artists will paint live at Red Bull Stereopticon where thanks to some pretty awesome video and projection technology their creation will be scaled up and projected real time, brush stroke for brush stroke, onto the walls of an iconic landmark building as a living light installation.

All materials and painting surface are provided/paid for by Red Bull. Artists will have the option to sell their completed piece to Red Bull for a guaranteed $1000. Or you can keep it for yourself.

How to enter

Submit a concept design by filling in this form. We’ll choose our three favourite artists to transform a building in one of three cities around New Zealand.

Submissions will be posted regularly on SIDEROOM.COM. Make sure you get in early and tell your friends to comment.

Final Closing Date for submissions – June 14, 2010.

After one and a half years the Pixel Ink fashion boutique, art gallery and illustration studio is about to close its Newtown doors. Pixel Ink owner’s Rosalind Clark and Glen Cooper have announced that the Pixel Ink Gallery will be moving to a new space at the rear of existing Cuba Street store.

“We are fortunate that the concept we started in Newtown can extend to our Cuba Street store which is a great space and double the size”, says Clark.

The new gallery space will officially open on the 24th of March and Wellington based emerging illustrative artist, Rachel Walker has been confirmed for the premier opening exhibition.

This will be Walker’s debut solo show and will run from the 24th of March to the 11th of April.

The exhibition titled “The Jellyfish Crossroads”, named after one of the paintings, is a collection of works loosely exploring interesting animals, characters, and pattern.

In this series of new works Walker uses watercolour combined with sketchy linework and spraypainted stencils.

“We are very excited to have Rachel onboard as her artworks are amazing and a great fit with what the gallery is about,” says Clark.

The revamped Pixel Ink fashion boutique and art gallery on Cuba Street will continue to stock great New Zealand made boutique fashion labels, alongside rotating art exhibition by local artists.

When Cut Collective artist Regan Vause (Peepshow) sought to push the envelope of stencil art application for the festival’s arts trail, he envisaged an installation of a suitable scale befitting the event and its stunning location.

“For Cut Collective, Splore is a perfect chance for us to push our own boundaries and take the opportunity to work with artists from different disciplines. In this case, working with Jasper, we are creating a painted architectural sculpture. This is something we have wanted to explore for a while now”

Jasper Middleton, a graduate architect working at award-winning practice Fearon Hay Architects, said the team wished to “create something that dually capitalised on the beautiful coastal setting of the festival location, as well as the fun, vibrant atmosphere on offer.

“We also wanted to provide something that took sculpture into the realm of the user, and provided a truly engaging experience that blurred the line between art and architecture.”

The resulting sculpture is a dramatic form that simultaneously functions as painting, sculpture, and building that will shelter its occupants and audience while creating a sense of intrigue for passers-by. “The geometry is deliberately difficult to comprehend from a distance, as the structure has varying degrees of visual permeability from each side it is viewed,” Middleton says.

The faceted, and interlocking surfaces of the pavilion create a sculpture that appears to be a site-specific work wedged into its environs. However, whilst complex in appearance, the structure has been deftly designed to fit together from a single component shape in order to minimise construction costs and ease the process of relocation.

Vause says “We have managed to produce an innovative work that can be packed down and shipped to a new site for further display, complete with a newly painted surface if need be. The flat panels present a canvas that can be approached however the occasion or site may require.”

This exciting blend of architectural design and art installation will be on display during the Splore outdoor music and art festival.

The SIDEROOM.COM EXTRAVAGANZA 2009 will combine our proven recipe for banging parties with a cutting edge multimedia art exhibition, to produce a festival of pure creative extravagance that is going to be bigger and better than anything you’ve seen before.

December 19, 2009 will see Aucklands Bacco and Montecristo room nightclubs transform into a mini festival overflowing with sensory delights. Upstairs in the art zone an interactive wonderland of multimedia installations and performance art will provide space for the imagination, while downstairs in the grotto a line up of bands and DJs will fulfil even the most hedonistic urge to party in infamously raucous SIDEROOM.COM style.
