Alexander Bartleet is best known for his works on canvas. Using thousands of real objects ranging from old door hinges to plastic toys and old jewelry. He covers the canvas in the objects and then renders them in various layered colours, patterns and textures.

Alexander says he is attracted to things that show evidence of their past, exposing sediments, histories and provenances. He prefers to use found objects, as opposed to their transferred or representational images. Preserved within the surfaces of paint, disregarded and forgotten objects are presented in a new light.

YOK | Artist Interview

For some years now, the droopy eyes and twisted moustaches of Yok’s black-lined characters have been staring aimlessly from Melbourne alleyways, zines and gallery walls. They seem to go sleepily about their business like everyone else, either happy or resigned to a life they didn’t choose. Yok currently works from a home studio in Perth and has exhibited in Tokyo, New York, Berlin, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei. He also edits the independent art periodical King Brown.

MY ART ISN’T… Sharp, I like loose wonky lines, curves and wobbly parts.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE ARE… For inspiration it’s usually a plane ticket to an interesting location, or a bike ride into town. For the making of images it’s acrylic paint, spray paint, shellac based inks, silk screens, Sumi Ink, pens, HB pencils, erasers, brushes, markers and laptop, scanner, Photoshop.

WHERE I LIVE NOW IS… In sunny Perth, it’s famous for being one of the most isolated cities in the world, which means you can always find a spot on the beach to yourself. There is a creative vibe in this city and a lot of talented artists are doing their thing.

WHERE I WAS BEFORE… Bangkok. I was living and working there for a year and a half, and painting most Sundays with four local artists. Hanging out with local guys, going to their houses and parties and eating noodles on the side of the road gave me a great insight into the Thai culture. An experience I’m sure I wouldn’t have gotten if I was just there as a tourist.

AUSTRALIA SHOULD... Be more accepting.

NEW ZEALAND IS… Fantastic.

KINGBROWN WILL… Be having an exhibition at the end of June. www.kingbrownmag.com

WHEN I WAS YOUNG I… Would build elaborate jumps to attack with my BMX.

THE MOST IMPORTANT… Thing is being good to people and doing the right thing by them, looking out for your friends and fellow humans.

WHEN I DAYDREAM I… Think about what it would be like to live in a tree house.

I LOVE… Super, good, aromatic, futuristic quality coffee, imagination, old circus fonts, beards.

I HATE… Pretentiousness, small dogs with little jackets and french names, the wrong wind.

THE WORLD RIGHT NOW… Is in denial.

IF HAD IT MY WAY I WOULD… Make more animals; just invent my own species of animal with great colour schemes and special powers, like being able to do your tax and making good coffee.

THE BEST PLACE I… Like to travel to is somewhere I haven’t been yet.

OLEX IS… The name of my new tax form filling animals.

IF I COULD EAT ONLY ONE THING FOR THE REST OF MY DAYS IT WOULD BE… Coffee.

DON’T TRUST… People with moustaches.

SOME PEOPLE… Are attractive.

THE BEST ADVICE… Is to stay positive, keep your head up, if you fail try again. Do your homework and practice.

EVERY DAY I… Use the internet.

TREASURE… Your talents.

Garth Badger | New Works

My name is Garth Badger, I’m a freelance photographer/videographer based in Auckland New Zealand. These pictures are from an experiment I shot recently, I want to give my stills work more animation / film qualities and steer away form conventional structured portraiture. These are all shot on digital but the effect is created in-camera, no Photoshop at all.

Eugenia Tsimiklis

Eugenia Tsimiklis is an illustrator and fashion prints designer from Adelaide, South Australia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Communications from the University of South Australia and moved to London. She worked as a fashion textile designer in studios in East London for five years and freelanced as an illustrator. In 2006 she moved back to Australia, relocating to Melbourne, and began work as a graphic designer in the fashion industry.

In her spare time, she loves to draw animals, flowers and all things nostalgic and is inspired by vintage prints, dresses and old story books, art nouveau graphics, coloured glassware and animal figurines.

Jimmy James Carson aka Kaveman Underdog. Was Born in Nz, grew up in Australia and currently lives in Nepal. He is influenced by street art and graffiti along with everything else his Sponge Bob brain soaks up. Like every other kid these days, when he grows up he wants be a famous street artist. Hes not sure where his work and style are going, and feels like they are always changing and evolving. But for now he just wants to create.

Zoe has a penchant for graphics, photography and illustration.Her work seems to revolve around a central theme of beauty and femininity, and she likes to vary her illustration style and media- using pencil, black ink pen and also watercolour and gouche.

Zoe is currently based in Wellington and is inspired by fashion magazines, art nouveau, pretty faces and flora and fauna. She is a self confessed art and design fiend who just wants to try and make the world a prettier place.

Patrick Gannon’s artwork is created entirely of cut-paper (and often wood) in his studio in Tokyo, Japan.

At once dark and playful, pensive and optimistic, the inhabitants of his work combine spirit and concept with the gorgeous textures of hand-made papers.

His artwork brings together influences from his life and experiences in urban Japan with his upbringing on a farm in New Jersey where he was surrounded and occasionally attacked by animals and the natural world. Fascinated from an early age by mythology and fables created to explain the world around us, he builds up layers of paper and meaning to explore and reveal. His gallery work can regularly be seen in shows around the US and Tokyo.

Miss Mica Still grew up in small town USA. She left home at an early age where she found herself attending art school, traveling Europe, then some how ended up in New Zealand 11 years ago for love. She now mentors promising artists to supplement her art career and ditched the love. Mica dreams in colour, a people enthusiast with shy tendencies, but in contrast her work never shy’s away form telling you like it is. Mica plays with symbols, real or imaginary which are the keys to the world she creates.

Her inspiration comes from feelings, daydreams, poems and music. She loves the night and its silence. While the rest of the city is asleep, she sneaks inside her creative bubble and paints away.
