For the last 10 years, Dominick Martin has been writing liquid drum & bass as ‘Calibre.’ During that time he’s become one of the most prolific and respected producers in the scene, inspiring intense devotion with his distinctive soulful grooves. Shine A Light is his much anticipated downtempo album, and it’s bursting with loveliness.
Free from the drum structures of drum & bass, Martin integrates many of his signature elements into tracks that sound both familiar and refreshingly new: lush, cinematic strings, pianos, jazz drumming, and his own voice. For me the beauty of his work has always been its (apparent) simplicity: beautiful parts, astutely arranged, with minimal manipulation – creating textured music with deep emotional resonance (listen to ‘Last Kiss’ and you’ll feel what I mean).
For existing fans, this album is a necessity. For new listeners Shine A Light is a gorgeous collection of songs from an accomplished musician, in any genre.
