After a few years of toiling away and a couple of recordings under their belts, Wellington four-piece Grand Prix have finally unleashed the beast! They’ve shrugged off the sound of that pussy-whipped ‘C’ word (that’s ‘country’ folks) to strum out a new flavour, the delectable and devourable flavour of rock.
The Speed of Sound is loaded with American rock influences from the 60s and 70s giving some songs that strutting swing of a Tarantino soundtrack. Other tracks dip dangerously close back towards the twangs of Nashville but come out instead with a more nostalgic Neil Young approach, more like the soundtrack to Easy Rider.
There are a couple of lyrics that will continue to itch my poetic sensibilities; references to ‘dream weavers’ and ‘rolling stones’ that probably belong more in the greatest hits of yesteryear. But hey, nothing a rollicking good guitar riff won’t fix.
What is really the moot point that makes this album cool is that it has that special undecipherable quality that makes for bloody good driving music. These guys are obviously into cars and must have had road trippin in mind when they laid this one out.
Hold on to The Speed of Sound and whip it out in summer when the sun is beating down, you’re barefoot and hungover, ready to slap on some sunnies, jump in the Holden and head up north for the weekend. It’ll be one of your best mates in no time.
